Event Kickoff and Contest Victory
HALF MOON BAY, Calif. January 25, 2007 Mavericks Surf Ventures (MSV) announced today that Pinger will serve as an official communications partner for The 2007 Mavericks Surf Contest® presented by Ask.com®. Pinger will provide free instant voice message updates to mobile phones regarding surf conditions and the status of the Contest. Pinger offers a way for surfers and fans to quickly hear the actual "greenlight" voice message from Mavericks pioneer and Contest Director Jeff Clark. Once waves reach contest-worthy conditions of 30-40 feet, the Mavericks team will greenlight the contest giving the 24 invited surfers 24 hours to arrive in Half Moon Bay ready to compete.
"Nothing compares to the power and emotion of your voice when it comes to communication. Pinger makes it possible for MSV to convey the contest greenlight and instantly send group messages about surf conditions and event updates to contestants and fans," said Greg Woock, co-founder and CEO of Pinger. "We're thrilled to partner with MSV to bring the power and convenience of Pinger to Mavericks' passionate surfers and fans."
Combining the speed of text messaging with the power of voice, Pinger is an instant voice messaging service that allows anyone to send a voice message directly to a US mobile phone. Starting today, surfers and fans can sign up free for Mavericks voice alerts at www.pinger.com. They will be able to receive ongoing voice updates about weather conditions from Stormsurf.com's Mark Sponsler, who is tracking the storms and swell for the Contest. Once the Contest is called, fans will receive a personal voice message from Jeff Clark and then receive periodic updates from event organizers throughout the day. At the conclusion of the Contest, subscribers may also receive a message from the 2007 Contest winner. All Pinger messages can be easily forwarded to groups, allowing fans to spread the word about the thrilling Contest.
"Surfers and fans anxiously await The Mavericks Surf Contest® every year, and are constantly looking for new ways to stay updated on surf conditions and the start of the competition," said Mavericks Managing Partner Keir J. Beadling. "Pinger is a perfect partner because it allows us to bring Mavericks to our surfers and fans with rich, fun voice messages while they're on the go and makes it easy to spread voice messages to other Mavericks buffs."
Lauded as the world's most anticipated big-wave surfing event, Mavericks brings together 24 of the worlds most prestigious big-wave surfers on just 24 hours notice any day between January 1 and March 31, 2007. The Mavericks wave is one of the most treacherous big waves in the world; only a few surfers are able to wrangle this heavy break.
Last season, 50,000 spectators and two million television and webcast viewers worldwide watched Mavericks' wildcard Grant "Twiggy" Baker ride a 40 foot wave to clinch the championship title. This year, surfers from South Africa, Australia, Brazil and California will battle it out for this esteemed title.
